The Results Are In

In issue 6 of TDJ, you probably saw the great article in the Customer Care, about how important it is send enough with your puppies to their new homes that the new owner feels prepared, all while not overwhelming them with useless products. We decided to do a real-life survey, and actually find out what’s wanted and what’s unnecessary. Around 170 people were surveyed, and the results are below. Here we go!

Highlights from Last Issue Questions 1-4

Question Number 1:

If you bought a new puppy, would you want it microchipped?

165 Yes

26 No

Ok, ok, so definitely an overwhelming percentage of people want their new puppies microchipped!

Question Number 2:

Would you prefer your documents and paperwork in hard copy or digital copy, or both?

113 Both

43 Hard Copy

33 Digital

This one surprised me a bit, I expected to see more people wanting just a digital copy over a hard copy, but it looks like there’s a lot of demand for both.

Question Number 3:

Would you prefer to (A) purchase your own puppy supplies, would you want them (B) included in the price of your new puppy, or would you prefer to order (C) just the supplies you want at an additional cost from the breeder.

120 A

36 B

32 C

Would you believe it? According to this, by far and away, most of your new puppy parents want to buy their own supplies!

Question Number 4:

Choose each of the items that you would ideally like to receive with your new puppy, but wouldn’t pay extra for.

98 puppy registration

98 microchips

94 30-day insurance policy

77 leash and collar

75 30-day supply of dog food

55 treats

50 toys

47 crate

36 training video or classes

Question Number 5: Which of the above are important enough that if it did not come with your puppy for free, you would be willing to pay additional for.

108 microchip

70 toys

69 leash and collar

68 treats

65 30-day supply of dog food

60 puppy registration

58 crate

45 30-day insurance policy

38 training video or classes

The winner here is the microchip, which isn’t really surprising. The other entries all look believable, although it’s interesting to note that out of 170 participants, only the microchip was important enough to garner over 100 votes, with everything else getting less than 50 percent importance.

If the breeder gave a 30-day supply of probiotics or gut health supplement with the puppy to decrease the chances of sickness, would you make sure your new puppy gets it?

100 Yes

84 No

Looks like the majority of new puppy buyers would make sure their new puppy gets a probiotic or gut health supplement if it came along, by default. I’m assuming even more of them would if the breeder took the time to explain how important it is.

When looking to choose a new puppy, would a $350.00 goody pack of products and perks make you choose that puppy over another without that pack?

172 Yes

12 No

And there’s the question we all wanted answered. By providing two puppies that are exactly the same, with the same parents, health checks, etc., would adding a sizable goody pack increase the chances of making someone choose your puppy over the next one?

As a standalone question, the answer is still overwhelmingly “Yes.” What we didn’t have the opportunity to do is ask every participant more follow up questions to find out if this was super important to them, or if they went by their gut reaction “Of course I’ll take the $350.00 pack.”

Earlier surveys tell us that simply adding products won’t offset a bad customer experience or a low quality or unhealthy puppy, and don’t forget question number 3 of the first part of this survey, where 120 participants said they would rather shop for their own supplies. Use your own judgment when deciding whether or not to offer a product pack, and when choosing the items to include. Hopefully this survey can give you some helpful insight.

Customer Survey: Issue 4

For this issue of The Dog Journal’s Results section, we’re going to talk about something a little different! In issue two, we did a giveaway drawing, and on the entries, we asked two questions. Everyone that entered for the drawing needed to fill out the answers to the questions, and the answers that came back were so interesting we decided to share them with our readers.
